This is the Surrender Deck on the USS Missouri, where the Japanese signed the documents of surrender in September 1945 in Tokyo Bay. General Douglas MacArthur presided over the ceremony. The American flag that flew on the Missouri that day was the same one that flew over the U.S. Capitol on December 7, 1941. Among the warships joining the Missouri in Tokyo Bay on surrender day was the USS West Virginia, which had been sunk by nine torpedoes at Pearl Harbor. She was salvaged and served in the last year of the war.
