HD4 – The Kapi’olani Lei Hula Gown

Here is a replica of Queen Kapi’olani’s Lei Hula gown displayed in her private bedroom. This was one of the dresses she wore at Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887. Just a few days later in Hawaii, King Kalakaua was forced to sign the Bayonet Constitution, under threat, which stripped him of personal authority. It also changed voting rights to benefit foreign resident aliens while suppressing voting rights for others in the kingdom.
