Running My First 5k

Since my work schedule changed drastically last spring, my wife and I don’t get to see each other as much as most couples. Lisa has been a runner for years, and I casually took up the sport last summer to spend more time with her early in the morning. As the weather changed, I also bought winter gear so that I can keep running at least a couple days a week with her.

Running a 5k (3.12 miles) race was on my bucket list, and I proposed last summer that we do it at the Portland Holiday Half Marathon and 5k in December. We also invited a really good friend and colleague of mine, whom I rarely see anymore because of the schedule change, to join us. This was also Garrett’s first road race.

Today was the day, and it was a lot fun. The race ended pretty quickly, but the rain let up while we were out, so the conditions were good in North Portland. We all finished and did well. My personal stats:

Overall Time – 31:15, Mile Pace – 10:03, Age Division Placing By Sex – 14 / 21, Placing By Overall Sex – 73 / 139, Overall Finish – 140 / 493.

My goal was to not finish last. Mission accomplished! Good times today. We’ll definitely run another race in the future.
