World Ukulele Day 2019

More tales of my journey with the ukulele are coming, but today we take a break (sort of) for World Ukulele Day, an annual tradition started in 2011 by “Ukulele Mike” Lynch. Ukulele Mike was a music teacher and composer in the Seattle area who also became a popular ukulele YouTube personality. He was actually one of the first people I found on the internet when I picked up the uke. Mike died suddenly in January 2018, but his YouTube channel and official website live on.

Also living on is World Ukulele Day, when everyone is encouraged to celebrate this instrument closely associated with Hawaii — either by playing or enjoying the music. Mike hoped to spread peace and love with this day of observation. My contribution is a cover of John Lennon’s Imagine:

A lot can be done with four strings, so pick up this remarkable instrument and play a few chords today. As Ukulele Mike said at the end of all his videos, “Happy strumming!”

Death Throes of a Presidency

The end is coming. You can feel it. I can feel it. While this White House has been a den of absurdity from the start, the legal pressure is ratcheting up, and the current nonsense on display portends to an ugly demise of this presidency. Robert Mueller’s final report is thought to be coming in the late winter or early spring. The White House has added 17 new lawyers to prepare for the congressional oversight that is nearing for this administration and for whatever is looming in the report.

Earlier this year I thought it was possible that the report could very well show nothing linking the president to suspected crimes during the 2016 campaign. Mueller has had a stellar reputation during his career, and if he didn’t find anything, then that’s the way it would be. However, the drips of information over the last few months, which have been major, make it clear that good news is not on the way for the president. And more bombshells are likely coming. The final verdict and the fallout are going to be highlights in the history books my child studies years from now.

In the meantime, we’ve got a ridiculous partial government shutdown where the president is proving how lousy he is at being a deal maker. He’s not getting the wall he so desperately craves, but he is determined to destroy everything in an attempt to force it into being. He has no leverage and the majority of the country is not on his side with any of this. Once again, he has created a crisis (long government shutdown) out of a manufactured crisis (demanding a border wall to keep his shrinking base happy). It’s a spectacular display of recklessness, but it’s about the only thing that keeps — for now — the headlines off whatever is coming from the special counsel investigation. We’re seeing the angry defiance of a president whose reality show is lurching toward cancellation. He feels it too.

The Joy Jar 2018

The joy jar tradition continues! The Mason jar in the kitchen is filled with slips of paper. Each slip is dated and has a note about something that gave us joy on that particular day. We read these out loud on New Year’s Eve. Here are some of the highlights from 2018:

  • I am the sudden and proud owner of a ukulele!
  • Watching Aria ice skate for the first time.
  • “I love you so much too, Daddy.”
  • Our new home is stunning, and we love it.
  • Watching Aria coach the AAA guy as he fixes Lisa’s tire.
  • “I like the music you make, Daddy.”
  • Seeing how Aria has developed her imagination.
  • Making up a story at Aria’s request about a cat and unicorn that love each other.
  • Hawaii…so wonderful to be back.
  • “Daddy! Dance with me!”
  • Lisa playing the new piano.
  • “The fireplace feels like a big warm monster hugging me.”  —  Aria, age 4

The main theme was once again family. We saved our favorite notes and put them in a time capsule with the others from years past. The new year always has its challenges and opportunities, so a new joy jar is ready to go for 2019 as a reminder of all that’s good during the next 365 days. Happy New Year!
